Our mission is to create the finest quality chocolate whilst respecting the Indigenous communities and protecting the environment of Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve in La Moskitia jungle, the rainforest where our cacao comes from.
📍Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve, La Moskitia, Honduras
Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve, the region where our cacao comes from, is the second largest rainforest in Mesoamerica and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to the largest cat species native to the new world, the jaguar and a great diversity of flora and fauna, including species of butterflies, bats, amphibians and reptiles.
Within La Moskitia, renowned archaeologists have found an ancient city which they named “White City”. Honduras has renamed the site “Lost City of the Jaguar”, based upon ancient jaguar sculptures encountered by the archaeologists, as well as the presence of living jaguars recorded by camera traps. Their occurrence at this site, which had not been visited by humans for 500 years, marks Ciudad Blanca as a jewel. However, it will not stay that way without large-scale conservation efforts.
Other rare and endangered species in the Reserve include the harpy eagle, the Central American tapir and the white-lipped peccary. The white-lipped peccary, a formerly widespread pig-like animal has now been lost in 87% of it's original range in Central America. However, scientists have recently discovered herds of peccaries thriving in the Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve.
📍Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, Roatan, The Bay Islands, Honduras
At our factory, we also have a commitment with the eco-system and local community where we operate. Our main location can be found on the beautiful island of Roatan, Honduras which rests in the middle of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System. Our reef is the second largest reef in the world, home to hundreds of fish species, marine turtles, sharks and a dazzling array of coral species.
For everyone in Roatan, protecting the reef is part of our daily lives; the island’s fate depends on the reef’s conservation.
lllegal cattle ranching and the selling of wood are the main causes for deforestation in one of the lungs of the world, La Moskitia. Trees in the region represent the homes of various animal species, including the endangered jaguar.
Through wild-cacao harvesting, indigenous communities of La Moskitia have an alternative way to support their economy and at the same time, protect the environment. Not only does wild-grown cacao get shade from taller trees, but also protects them from getting cut. Chocolate made with wild-grown cacao from La Moskitia is considered to be environmentally friendly.
We have partnered with the Wildlife Conservation Society and created a Conservation Collection to promote conservation of La Moskitia, Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve and the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. By purchasing Conservation Collection chocolate you are supporting WCS's conservation efforts in La Moskitia and in the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef.

Help Conserve the Five Great Forests!
5 million people depend on Mesoamerica's 5 great forests. They keep half of the region's carbon stores locked away. But we're losing them.
Now, a critical new initiative to protect these forests has launched. WCS joins other NGOs, governments, Indigenous Peoples and local communities on this project to benefit all life on Earth.
